Raise Awareness for Oral Cancer This Month!

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, a time to shine a spotlight on a disease that has personally affected my life in numerous ways. My grandfather's battle with oral cancer ended tragically, and several other family members have faced pre-cancerous lesions.

During my time in the Army, I was exposed to many oral cancer cases. As a result, I am highly conservative and cautious in my practice. We've diagnosed and helped to treat many head and neck cancer cases during my tenure at Dallas Dental Arts. And while the trend for oral cancer is not decreasing, we are working hard to combat the illness by ensuring all our patients are regularly screened and know what to look for when it comes to signs and symptoms.

Oral cancer usually presents as a mouth sore that is persistent and won't go away. The sore often resembles an ulcer and can be both white and red in color. Patients may experience pain in their mouths or have difficulty swallowing. If the lesion has lasted more than 7 days, please call our office to be seen.

The journey to diagnose and treat oral cancer begins with your dentist, who is equipped to perform a thorough screening. If necessary, a referral to an oral surgeon or ENT may follow for further evaluation. Treatment varies based on the cancer's location and stage but may include surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation.

At Dallas Dental Arts, we emphasize the importance of prevention and early detection, conducting oral cancer screenings during all regular dental exams and for every new patient. This comprehensive approach includes a physical examination of the soft tissues and advanced dental radiographs.

To reduce the risk of oral cancer, we advocate for a healthy lifestyle free from tobacco and heavy alcohol use. Vaccination against the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is also crucial in preventing head and neck cancers linked to the virus. This Oral Cancer Awareness Month, we're highlighting our use of high-resolution photography during dental hygiene visits. This innovative technique aids in the early detection of intra oral changes, ensuring we provide the highest quality care for you and your loved ones.
